Songs with Twist Endings

It's always cool to listen to the lyrics of a song and discover that it's not at all what it seemed to be.

For most of the song, you are led to believe that "Marie" in the song is the singer's girlfriend, forced apart from him by her mother. It turns out it's his six-year-old daughter, separated from him by a divorce or separation.

99% of the song is Meatloaf bragging about how he had sex with a girl in a car. You don't find out until the very end that the whole thing is a lament, and he can't stand the girl, whom he had ended up marrying. "I'm praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you!"

It's that classic tale. Boy is supposed to meet his sweetheart, ends up waiting for her in the rain, wondering why she's stood him up. Then he realizes he's been waiting in the wrong place all along.

Guy offers to hire a girl as his driver, to show off how successful he is. Turns out, he doesn't even own a car. Yet.

While I'm off wandering the neighborhood tonight, taking pics of neighborhood hooligans vandalizing homes, and making sure they steer clear of my street, I'll have a few tunes in my Discman.

Yes, I still have a Discman. What, did you think I still had a Walkman? (Well, I do, but not for tonight...)

For those who aren't aware, that last one comes from the Groovy Goolies, which was a horror-comedy themed Archie cartoons in the 70's. I personally thought it was a lot more interesting (I was also 8, which might have something to do with it), but the Groovie Goolies never had a pop hit single like "Sugar, Sugar", so they never really caught on. Alas...

Welcome back, kiddies! Today's musical massacre comes to us straight outta Ghoultown, a band I discovered a few years back, which calls itself "gothabilly" (AWESOME name for a music style!) and now can't get enough of.

31 Days of Halloween: The Call of Cthulhu Soundtrack

Composer Graham Plowman has written a soundtrack to the classic HP Lovecraft story, "The Call of Cthulhu". It's available for sale on Amazon, and can also be heard on YouTube (through the composer's own channel, so it should be official and legal). If they sound inspired by the soundtrack to the original series of Omen films, they should. According to the notes, that was one of Plowman's inspirations. Great stuff, and certainly good ambient music for a Call of Cthulhu game session.

31 Days of Halloween: A few songs to start us off

It's that magical time of year, boys and ghouls! I'm going to try to make a post every day this month, in honor of Halloween (aka Samhain, aka All Hallow's Eve, etc.). Some will be spooky, some will be songs, some will be gaming related, but hopefully all will be fun. Here's my first entry, a couple of murky musical missives from the Squirrel Nut Zippers...

RIP Davy Jones

Apropos of nothing whatsoever to do with gaming, but growing up as a kid in the 1970's, reruns of the Monkees were a staple part of life, and part of my age group's shared cultural experience as surely as Bugs Bunny and Star Trek.

Davy Jones, the British representative of the Monkees, died today at age 66 of a heart attack. He was quite an entertainer in a variety of venues; stage, television, and of course music. His was one of the voices of my formative years, and I'll forever regret never having seen him in concert.

Goodbye, Mr. Jones.
